Main Dramatics GC

23rd – 24th October, 2010
LT

The main dram GC in its new avatar – split into 2 days for the very first time to ensure longer rehearsal times with lights, definitely lived up to its expectations. 13 plays, each as good as the other. Well just to judge which one was better than the rest, we had a very distinguished panel of judges:
1. Mrs Rashi Bunny – a thorough veteran in the field of theatre, she has been a director, a writer and a very skilled actor for indeed a very long time. She has certain very distinguished accolades to her name including Top 50 emerging icons of India
2. Mrs. Aditi Sharma – a professional theatre actor for the last 12 years, she has been a co-writer and actor of the winning play at Thespo, one of the more prestigious theatre competitions with a Best supporting actress award to her name.
3. Mr. Saurabh Pathak – A professional theatre actor himself, he has been involved in training actors for theatre and cinema for the past 15 years at the Roshan Taneja foundation for Performing Arts.

Kudos to all the efforts put in by the hostels!! Their week long preparations could be surely seen on stage.

The dram GC ended with H6 as the overall winner.

The judges were completely astonished by the performances as they said that they did not expect it from us. Seeing the potential, the judges have left with some really good news for us:

1. Mrs Rashi Bunny has voluntarily agreed to conduct a workshop for us. Besides, seeing the potential, she is even interested in directing us for a play
2. Mr Saurabh Pathak, a theatre actor trainer, has agreed to give us 10-12 days of his time to help us out with a certain play in whichever way we want
3. Mrs. aditi sharma has said that she shall be available to IIT for whatever kind of help we require for developing dramatics here be it professional help or be it conducting workshops.

Looking forward to a more improved dramatics culture at IITB.

Technicals Session by Sameer Mishra

Tuesday, 19th October 2010
Yoga Room

The judges of last year’s Main Dram GC had made a comment, “You’ll are a tech institute and almost all the plays messed up in technicals. Funny”. Keeping this mind, several measures were taken to ensure a better level of technicals this year at the Main Dram GC, the first of them being this session by Sameer Mishra.

Technicals in theatre basically involves the correct and efficient usage of lights, sounds and prod during a play. The session mainly concentrated on the use of lights and sound. Sameer started off with describing the importance of lights in a play and how they can be used to create different effects on stage, even without the presence of any kind of prod. He showed examples from previous IITian plays as to how light was and can be used to potray sometimes different moods, sometimes emotions and sometimes even various characters.

He moved on to sound where he mentioned about how much time in a play should there be background music, how does one choose which soundtrack to play and how can live music be put in effectively.

It surely was an insightful session and people attending it will definitely agree. The session certainly proved its significance as this session coupled with the extra time given to hostels for practicing by splitting the GC into 2 days, resulted in a much sound usage of technicals this year as compared to last time around!

Film-making Classes

Film-making classes were conducted on 7th, 13th and 18th Oct with an amazing response from the students. The classes for screenplay writing and cinematography/direction motivated people to start making videos on their own and editing class made sure they learn how to complete those. We will be having advanced classes in near future. Also, we will be making some good length films in which all interested people can actually get involved and use what they have learnt.

IQL – General Quiz

The highly awaited lit event, the IQL Gen Quiz was held with much aplomb on Tuesday,
the 18th. The rains played spoil sport yet again, leading to the change in venue from the
OAT to the SAC yoga room. The turnout was fairly decent. Quizmaster Ashwin Krishnan
ensured a healthy mix of all genres and made it, as he put it, a Very General Quiz. The
eliminations consisted of 30 questions, all fairly workout-able. 6 senior teams made it to the
finals, amongst which 2 freshie teams were divided to make the teams of 4 each. The finals
consisted of dry rounds, a long visual connect, a choose-your-topic round and a challenge
round, which didn’t go quite as expected. The quiz was highly entertaining, but with
hardly any audience to enjoy it. The evening also saw a lot of heated arguments amongst
participants, vying for the top spot. The final results were as follows:

1. Mukund , Surinderjeet, Mayur, Harshveer.
2. Kislay, Meghna, Mukul, Pranay.
3. Uttapam(Paddy), Shanbhag, Pulklit, Chirag.
4.Vinit, Priyank, Rushabh, Abhie.
5. Antariksh, Ritika, Baheti, Aditya Dongre.
6. Aviral, Raghavan, Dempo, Advait.

Technicals session (use of lights and sound in plays) by Sameer Mishra

Hey everyone,
With Main Dram GC around the corner, we will be holding a techincals session i.e. session on usage lights and sound in plays. It will be conducted by our very own Sameer Mishra 😀

Date: Tuesday, 19th October
Time: 9pm
Venue: Yoga Room

Will surely turn out to be an interesting session as we generally tend to screw up in techincals. 😛
See you all there!!

Photography Lecture Series

A series of photography lectures is being conducted consisting of four lectures spread over the month of October with an aim to train people in photography right from the root level. Coinciding with the ongoing photography GC, this would also help the people from the viewpoint of the GC. Apart from the theoretical training through the lectures, these lectures are interspersed with photography sessions from time to time when people will get to try hands-on what they learn in the lectures.

The first two lectures took place on 8th and 12th October and both saw a participation of about 90-100 students. The lectures were prepared by Bijon Lahiri and Harshwardhan. Jasvipul joined the team for the 2nd lecture. Topics covered during these two lectures were:
– Basic Working of a Camera
– Exposure Triangle
– Camera Modes
– Metering Modes

A photography session was conducted on 16th October, Saturday at 7am at the Lake side and saw about 10 newbies along with 5 others. This gives impetus to conducting many more sessions of this kind every morning and probably forming smaller groups with mentors in each who could go out for photography as and when it pleases them.

The other two lectures in the series are planned for 19th and 28th October respectively

Open Potpourri

Open Potpourri report:

The much awaited Open potpourri event took place on 13th October, Wednesday in H2 mess. Set
and conducted by Mukund and Baheti, the event was a success- lots of fun and entertainment all
round. Around 100 people(30-40 teams) turned up for the competition.

First were the elims, consisting of a few rebuses, Dumb-C’s, Pictos and Manhunts. 6 teams made it
to the finals, with one freshies (bandi) team making it through as well. The finals were split into 7
rounds. Most notable were the Coco Bongo round, involving drumming cartoon theme songs to the
rest of your teammates, and the Matchstick Picto round, which all teams cracked. The second last round was the chain reaction round where one member dumb-C’d the event to the second person,
and then further cluing by picto or tinto to the third member. The final round which settled it all was the speed acting dumb charades round which was cracked by the sophie team who won by a very very narrow margin of 2 points.
All in all, an awesome event, cracked by Rushabh, Sankalp and Priyank in first place, Kislay, Eeshan and Ishan in second and followed by Meghna, Vinit and Ritika in third.

IQL Sports Quiz

IQL Sports

The newly launched Institute Quizzing league kicked off with the Sports Quiz on Monday, 11th
September. An awesome elims and good finals, set and conducted by Ishan Srivastava. Due to
weather constraints, the event which was originally to be held in OAT, got shifted to the Yoga room,
but no complaints from participants. Around 40 teams turned up.

The 30 question elims were followed by 6 rounds in the finals. Six non-freshie teams made it
through. Two freshies teams were taken and split up among the senior teams. The finals had many
interesting rounds with challenge funda and long connects were there. In a very surprising turn,
with points changing with every round, 2 teams- Mukund, Anvay, Meghna and Ranjit as well as
Ashwin Raghavan, Surinderjeet, Omkar Nene and Aditya Bhandati were tied for first place. Paddy(Uttapam), Harsh, Animesh, and Sudarshan came 3rd.

All members of the winning teams get points added to their individual tallies, so a ranking will be
obtained. Let’s hope the enthusiasm continues in the quizzes ahead!

The points tally has been put up here –
