Institute Comedy Central

Hey Everyone!

We are pleased to announce the commencement of Institute Comedy Central. Comedy Central, as the name suggests, will be a comedy show comprised of comedy videos made by insti junta. Around 3-4 videos will be fused to make one show every 15 days which will be showcased at the immediately next movie screening/cultural event held in LT. Along with the video making, Institute Comedy Central will also be extended to comic strip making. The best entry apart from winning prizes in both English and Hindi will be printed in Insight and Aawaaz respectively in their next editions.

The theme for the first show/comic strip is Movie Spoof. Entries can range from a fundoo explanation for Inception to spoofing the great old heroes like Shahrukh, Amitabh or Gabbar Singh. You may even have super heroes like Shaktiman, Batman or even Harry Potter as your victims. All you need to do is to choose a situation and make it funny with the involvement of some known characters or through establishing the resemblance to some movie/tv series scene. The main criteria for selection of the video/comic strip would be creativity and the comic element and thus no specific knowledge of filmmaking is essential.

The best 2 entries for the 1st episode/strip will win gift vouchers worth INR 1000. Also, top 10 entries in both the competitions shall be awarded treats by respective hostel cult cos.

All videos will be uploaded on the Youtube Channel : http://www.youtube.com/silverscreeniitb

All comic strips will be shared on DC.

You can submit your videos/comic strip till 10th September to the address iitbsilverscreen@gmail.com . If you have problems sending the file or for any further guidance/help/inquiry, please contact :

Eco Ganesha Workshop 29th August

Attended by a crowd of more than 60, the workshop was yet another successful event which saw more than 25 idols being made by freshies and seniors alike. The objective of the event – to celebrate ganesh chaturthi in a green way – was achieved through participation from almost all the hostels which will now use the idols made today for celebration rather than the conventional idol which are a hazard to the water bodies.
Thanks to Vidya-Mumbai for helping us out with the conduct of the workshop. Workshop was taken by Mr. Amar and Mrs. Ashwini from the NGO who have conducted numerous such workshops. Students were first taught how to model the idols out of clay in detail and then painting and decoration of idols with natural colours was demonstrated and colors distributed for painting the idol later on.
Kudos to all the Hostel Photography and Fine Arts Secretary for making the event so successful. Some people who came to see the event actually remarked that just from plain poster publicity, so many people on a weekend afternoon turned up. This was owing to the awareness created in each hostel about the event through a small presentation circulated through hostel mailing lists so that everybody knew what exactly is going to happen.

Pictures will be soon uploaded on http://picasaweb.google.com/RangConvener/

Popular Linguistics – I: Phonetics

The first Popular Linguistics Session on Saturday, the 28th of August, went off very well. It was conducted
by our very own expert, Antariksh Bothale, with several helpful additions by Harish Ramdas. About 15
people turned up for the session, which was held in the SAC library, and lasted from 6.15 to 8.15 p.m.

This session dealt with phonetics, starting from the very basics. The discussion covered how sounds
are produced (not in the larynx, FYI), the types of vowel and consonant sounds in English and Hindi in
some detail, as well as interesting and exotic sounds in other languages. All in all, a reasonably thorough
overview of phonetics and a lot of fun!

Eco Ganesha Workshop

Every year, Ganesh chaturthi in IIT is celebrated in an eco friendly manner. The idols used by students are made of eco-friendly materials. For this purpose, Rang the Fine Arts Club of IITB is organising an Eco Ganesha Workshop with guidance from Vidya, an NGO located in SAC.

The event is scheduled at 2:30pm on 29th August, Sunday at OAT. Please be there to represent your hostel as it also carries 2 participation points towards overall Cult GC. All the materials will be provided on the spot. All you need to bring is a base for your idol to place it on.

Popular Linguistics – I

Hey

We are planning to conduct a series of interactive sessions on Linguistics. The sessions will discuss various fields of linguistics and how they manifest themselves in the languages we speak everyday, and how rules that we have been taught to follow make sense at some level and interconnect and have some consistency, rather than just being a mass of rules and a bigger mass of exceptions. The first session will be chaired by our in-house language expert, Antariksh Bothale and will focus on Phonetics. The session will be more like an informal discussion rather than a lecture, and we believe that both novices and initiates will have something to gain from it. The mode of discussion will focus more on the practical aspect of Phonetics rather than technicalities and jargon.
