Photography Lecture Series

A series of photography lectures is being conducted consisting of four lectures spread over the month of October with an aim to train people in photography right from the root level. Coinciding with the ongoing photography GC, this would also help the people from the viewpoint of the GC. Apart from the theoretical training through the lectures, these lectures are interspersed with photography sessions from time to time when people will get to try hands-on what they learn in the lectures.

The first two lectures took place on 8th and 12th October and both saw a participation of about 90-100 students. The lectures were prepared by Bijon Lahiri and Harshwardhan. Jasvipul joined the team for the 2nd lecture. Topics covered during these two lectures were:
– Basic Working of a Camera
– Exposure Triangle
– Camera Modes
– Metering Modes

A photography session was conducted on 16th October, Saturday at 7am at the Lake side and saw about 10 newbies along with 5 others. This gives impetus to conducting many more sessions of this kind every morning and probably forming smaller groups with mentors in each who could go out for photography as and when it pleases them.

The other two lectures in the series are planned for 19th and 28th October respectively

28th September, H7 Mess – 33 teams from 13 hostels came together to put forth their ideas of a robot. It was truly a FA event for IITians. From autonomous hair dresser to amphibian spybots – participating teams offered a wide range of concepts and designs. 3 hours of FAgiri materialized their ideas into amazing robotic models some of which displayed movable joints to stresss upon their functionality while some others made it clear that they were here to design a marketable product. Even the freshies were no less and came up with completely working mechanical transformer.
Results of the event were as follows:
H2 – Oil Spills Cleaner
H9 – Sky Scrapper Cleaner
H10 – Farm Bot
H8 – Bench cum Garbage picker
H3 – Mobile Plant Preserver

Wall Painting

25th – 30th September 2010

It started at 6:30pm on 25th September. The basic design was sketched and bulk of the first coat of paint was done the same day. Apart from Rang senior members, 4-5 freshies were completely involved even during the first day. We stopped at 10:30 pm for the day with a promise to resume the fun at 2pm the next day.

At 2pm, under the afternoon Sun, we began with a workforce of jus 5 people, three of them freshies. People came and left. 10 people on an average were there throughout the evening. It went on till 1:30am when finally we decided to wrap up for the day. About 10-15 freshers participated with 7-8 for extended period of time

It was a fantastic experience for all of us, the seniors as well as the freshers. Freshers specially did a commendable work during the last 5 hours when a lot of work was done so fast.

We will be resuming tonight at 9pm for final 2hours of work

Face Painting @ Freshiezza 5th September

Like every year, face painting proved to be a hit again. It was a crowd of 86 and about 50 faces were painted. It started off with distribution of paints and brushes o the junta and there were two themes given to choose from – ‘Wildlife’ and ‘Angels and Demons’. Vikas, Jim, Pinkesh, Priyanka, Shuchi and Yashaswi got the event started by handling the registrations and material distribution.

Joyjeet and Akvil gave some initial fundae on face painting to the freshers so as to get them going with the painting. Joyjeet once again was there all throughout for guiding us during the course of the event, be it deciding the themes or finally judging the entries. Ashwini, Akvil and Vikas not only were present but also had a hand in enthusing the participants by themselves getting involved in painting.

In the end, Tejashree, Richa and Joy had a tough time in choosing the top 3 out of the 43 odd teams that had come to participate in the event. On organizational front, there was a small issue of shortage of materials due to more than expected turn out. However, it was covered up immediately before a major fall out happened.

Thanks to Tejashree, Richa, Joyjeet, Akvil and Ashwini for being there to make sure everything went flawless and kudos to all the hostel PFA secretaries and club conveners for organizing yet another successful event.

Collage Making @ Freshiezza – 4th September

Once again, the crowd was awesome. Almost a 100 people took part and came up with more than 32 collages which the judges had a difficult time to pick the best from. There were two themes to choose from – “Freedom” and “War and Peace” and participants worked in teams of three.
It started with junta coming in and the hostel PFA secretaries did a great job of ensuring that everybody had the materials to work with and things were in control throughout. Vikas, Pinkesh, Aditya, Shivendra, Jim, Priyanka and Rajkumar ensured a huge participation.
Tejashree, Joy and Richa gave a brief introduction to the freshers about how to make a collage and the judging criteria of the competition. Teams were all registered by then and started working. They were all given a time of two hours to complete. Thanks to Joy for being there throughout the entire time of the event and overseeing everything wherever there was a possibility of an error. Vikas, Jim, Pinkesh, Priyanka and Aditya stayed back till the end too mentoring and helping out the freshers with their collage.
Finally, Tejashree and Joyjeet sat down to judge the best 3 out of the 32 collages that were made.
All in all, it was a fantastic event which saw around 100 freshers coming together including some PG’s too. Kudos to the overtly enthusiastic hostel PFA’s and the conveners as well as the Club seniors for such a successful event. The event set yet another example where a publicity plan of intimating the details of the event through hostel secretaries worked and saw a large participation.

Eco Ganesha Workshop 29th August

Attended by a crowd of more than 60, the workshop was yet another successful event which saw more than 25 idols being made by freshies and seniors alike. The objective of the event – to celebrate ganesh chaturthi in a green way – was achieved through participation from almost all the hostels which will now use the idols made today for celebration rather than the conventional idol which are a hazard to the water bodies.
Thanks to Vidya-Mumbai for helping us out with the conduct of the workshop. Workshop was taken by Mr. Amar and Mrs. Ashwini from the NGO who have conducted numerous such workshops. Students were first taught how to model the idols out of clay in detail and then painting and decoration of idols with natural colours was demonstrated and colors distributed for painting the idol later on.
Kudos to all the Hostel Photography and Fine Arts Secretary for making the event so successful. Some people who came to see the event actually remarked that just from plain poster publicity, so many people on a weekend afternoon turned up. This was owing to the awareness created in each hostel about the event through a small presentation circulated through hostel mailing lists so that everybody knew what exactly is going to happen.

Pictures will be soon uploaded on http://picasaweb.google.com/RangConvener/

Eco Ganesha Workshop

Every year, Ganesh chaturthi in IIT is celebrated in an eco friendly manner. The idols used by students are made of eco-friendly materials. For this purpose, Rang the Fine Arts Club of IITB is organising an Eco Ganesha Workshop with guidance from Vidya, an NGO located in SAC.

The event is scheduled at 2:30pm on 29th August, Sunday at OAT. Please be there to represent your hostel as it also carries 2 participation points towards overall Cult GC. All the materials will be provided on the spot. All you need to bring is a base for your idol to place it on.

Rang Orientation – 13th August – Mask Making

Awesome Orientation.
About 70 people turned up. And apart from these, since it ws publicized in all hostels and publicized only as a mask making session and not a freshie orientation, a few sophies and PG’s also turned up.
We started off with a brief introduction by Tejashree about the club and its activities. After that everybody where given a set of coloured sheets and colours to make masks from. It was a great experience for everybody. Replacing thumb painting which have been done in the club orientation for the last few years with Mask Making turned out to be great as people thoroughly enjoyed the experience of not just painting but a little craft work too.
