First “On a Roll”

Last thursday Staccato kicked off with this years on a roll with a more-than-expected audience :-).On a rolls are basically informal jamming sessions conducted in hostel messes, lounges, lawns etc. Staccato aims at carrying the ‘band’wagon to different hostels through on a rolls. H4 lounge was chosen as the venue mainly to ensure our freshers enthusiastically participate in the upcoming Freshizza Music events. We saw a Freshie band from H4 relive punk rock by covering Green Day. Other prepared performances included Fade to Black , Stars by Switchfoot, Scar Tissue, Comfortably Numb, Smoke on the good old water etc. Apart from these, impromptu jamming was also thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. We hope to be coming to other hostels soon.

Surbahar Auditions!!!

Surbahar is the biggest musical fest that the students of IIT Bombay organize and perform in. It is a mixture of musical talent from across all hostels, all batches and all departments. The performance on the convocation stage is the culmination of long and enjoyable sessions of practices. But the journey through Surbahar is not just this one grand performance on stage; it is also about the bonding that the many musicians share while discovering and performing music.

Auditions for the Big Showtime are being held on Monday at 8pm.

Vocals auditions are happening in the SAC Yoga Room and Instrumental auditions in the Music Room.

We hope to see a grand turnout. Auditions are compulsory for all.

Collage Making @ Freshiezza – 4th September

Once again, the crowd was awesome. Almost a 100 people took part and came up with more than 32 collages which the judges had a difficult time to pick the best from. There were two themes to choose from – “Freedom” and “War and Peace” and participants worked in teams of three.
It started with junta coming in and the hostel PFA secretaries did a great job of ensuring that everybody had the materials to work with and things were in control throughout. Vikas, Pinkesh, Aditya, Shivendra, Jim, Priyanka and Rajkumar ensured a huge participation.
Tejashree, Joy and Richa gave a brief introduction to the freshers about how to make a collage and the judging criteria of the competition. Teams were all registered by then and started working. They were all given a time of two hours to complete. Thanks to Joy for being there throughout the entire time of the event and overseeing everything wherever there was a possibility of an error. Vikas, Jim, Pinkesh, Priyanka and Aditya stayed back till the end too mentoring and helping out the freshers with their collage.
Finally, Tejashree and Joyjeet sat down to judge the best 3 out of the 32 collages that were made.
All in all, it was a fantastic event which saw around 100 freshers coming together including some PG’s too. Kudos to the overtly enthusiastic hostel PFA’s and the conveners as well as the Club seniors for such a successful event. The event set yet another example where a publicity plan of intimating the details of the event through hostel secretaries worked and saw a large participation.

InSync Orientation and Salsa Workshop

It was raining cats and dogs all day..the 27th of  August..It left us wondering whether the rain would stop, whether people would turn up for the show we had planned..But then the skies cleared at 7:00pm and it had stopped raining after 3 days just for the workshop!!! Phew, we were so damn lucky..

And then came the crowd..awesome freshies I must say..Infi enthu hai..Happy ho gaye hum itni enthu junta dekh kar

For the orientation we had showcased 3 performances: Bhangra (all freshies except 1), Fusion (all freshies), and Hiphop. All performances were loved and heartily applauded by everybody.

The conveners of the Club, Chandu and Sushant and the A.I.D.S. OCs Vinod and Nechlani together did a great job with explaining the Club and A.I.D.S. respectively.

Then came the long awaited SALSA performance. The presentation was awesome, all ladies looking gorgeous along with the handsome gentlemen. (I putched though 😦 )

After the performance was over, the best part had come..The time to learn SALSA. The couples already paired up were finally relieved (finally jisliye aaye the woh cheez shuru hui 😉 ) And the ones not paired up were desperately looking for someone to dance with..And eventually as always (thanks to the awesome boy-girl ratio in IIT), there were 3 kinds of couples, with all possible combinations.

But once the salsa started, nobody cared about whether they are dancing with a guy or a girl, they were all engrossed in learning..That’s the spirit of dance..Its what you learn that matters and not how!!

Kudos to Vinod for doing an awesome job with the mike..the couples thoroughly enjoyed his anchoring (his typical ‘Sholon si Sholon si’, GO GO GO!! etc etc)

It feels great to see happy and satisfied faces when they are going back after all the ups and downs you face in the maling of such a workshop.

Cheers,

Siddha

Freshizza Treasure Hunt

The first event of Freshizza, the treasure hunt took place tonight. More than 500 people (126 teams of 4) participated, and at least 80 teams finished. There were a few glitches, including a cow eating some of the clues at a location, but it was largely mistake-free. Having participated/been involvement in conduction of the treasure hunt for the last 3 years, I think I can safely say that this was perhaps the one with the least mistakes. Full credit to Ishan Shrivastava and his team of coordinators (Jay, Namit, Rahil, Priyank, Vivek, Gurbaksh, Paddy, Vinit, Meghna, Rushabh) for setting the event, and to all the sophies who conducted it, especially those of you who came last moment to bail us out.

I apologize to the teams which had to wait at a location for one reason or the other, but then again, the point of a Treasure Hunt is not to win, but to have fun with your friends, and explore the campus. I’m sure lots of you discovered places that you hadn’t been to, in the course of searching for locations, and I hope all of you had fun. Still, results need to be declared, and after factoring in time bonuses, and clue penalties the final results are –

1. Shuvam, Abhishek, Saurabh, Vijay – H3
2. Hardik, Abhishek, Anuj, Varshul- H4
3. Pravesh, Rahul, Tanmay, Raghav – H4
4. Shravan, Lalit, Atul, Souradip – H4 (These guys apparently did the whole treasure hunt on foot!)
5. Nishikant, Raaz, Dinesh, Nitish – H4
6. Soorya, Upasana, Meryl, Gowri – H10
7. Suhas, Manoj, Sudhakar, Chaitanya – Hostel unknown
8. Sachin, Uday, Utkarsh, Anil – H4
9. Ram, Animesh, Ashraq, Pawan – H4
10. Girraj, Giriraj, Anuj(?), Navdeep – H3

Again, if a mix-up on our part cost you, we are very sorry. But as I said, the point of the treasure hunt was to have fun, and I hope you had tons. If not, do come for the Lit events tomorrow. You will definitely have some there :).

Cheers,

Mukund

Annual Sophie Prod – Event Report

P.C.S.A. Auditorium,
1st September,2010.

A fully packed LT, an enthusiastic audience, and seven power packed plays …we had it all to make one spectacular event to be lasting in the memories of many. The Annual Sophomore Productions, fondly called as the Sophie prod, was conducted to promote theatrical skills among the sophomore students of the institute, it being the first professional platform for many. The teams consisted exclusively of sophies, with mentors allotted to them from the senior batches.

The first play in the line was “Kshitij”. Performed by a team of about 10 sophomores, the play showed we get two different paths in life at each moment, and we can select only one. That choice is very crucial, and once we have made it, there’s no point regretting it. We could not have selected both and so, we must RESPECT OUR CHOICE.
Next in line was a play by the PG students titled “Baba Idol”. The enthusiasm shown by the students was praiseworthy and the audience response, all the more overwhelming. It was a comedy play portraying the true colours of melodrama.
“Rehaii” was the play to be staged next. The play portrayed the story of an Indian prisoner in a Pakistan jail; an extremely well written script with emotions that melted hearts of the audience.
“1729 Bhoogolik express” was a simple yet one of the most elegant plays depicting a conversation between a retired soldier and a businessmen caught up in the corporate world.
Thereafter we had “Doosra Kinara” on the stage. It was a satirical play with a very subtle humour, the story of a man who succumbs to the widespread corruption and becomes a terrorist.
“He is”, the next play, portrayed the presence of god in our lives in human forms. Even though the story was simple but the presentation was awesome!
Last but not the least, “Q.E.D. “, the first ever sophie English play to be staged. The play entailed the story of a group of people having control over the earth. One of the better written and executed English plays that IIT has seen in recent times, truly Shakespearean if it were to be summed up in one word.

The audience enjoyed the splendid colours of theater displayed in the seven plays of different generes and entirely different plots. It wasn’t just another event but a night that shall certainly remained ingrained in the minds of those performing as well those watching!

Bollywood Night – The Night that was…

Bollywood Night

The first institute social event of the year! And a massive turnout it was!

General opinion was that it was a very well-set event. Machaxxx by Ishan Shrivastava and Nidhi!

People found the elims very good. The rounds in the finals were awesome – the variations in the rounds made it interesting.

The Rounds in the Finals were:

1 )Bollywood Controversies Round: The Round was relating Bollwood Controversies and Amul Ads.

2) Antakshari Round: There were 2 Antakshari rounds, one of them which had betting incorporated. This was enjoyed by a lot of participants.

3) Dance Round: This round had dance videos shown on the screen, and the participants had to dance to them. The most entertaining round(maybe not for the participants!)

4)DumbC: The Bollywood Night would have been incomplete without a Dumb Charades round, and it did not disappoint.

Great End to a Great Night!

The winners were Siddha, Vinod and Siddharth. They won vouchers worth Rs.1500 from toubebas.com, a T-shirt design startup of IIT alumni. Bhavna, Gouri, Eeshan and Archana came second. So overall the event was a great success and an awesome start to the social events.
